Greener Communities, Stronger Economies: The Power of Fruit Trees
Summary
Greener Communities, Stronger Economies: The Power of Fruit Trees explores how fruit trees can address environmental challenges while creating sustainable economic opportunities for local communities. The presentation highlights the environmental benefits of fruit trees, including carbon sequestration, soil improvement, biodiversity conservation, and land restoration. It also examines their contribution to food security, improved nutrition, and climate resilience.
Beyond their ecological value, fruit trees provide direct and indirect economic benefits through fruit production, value-added processing, income generation, and job creation across local value chains. The presentation will demonstrate how integrating fruit trees into farms, schools, public spaces, and community landscapes can enhance household incomes and strengthen local economies.Drawing on examples from Nigeria and other regions facing similar environmental challenges, the session emphasizes the importance of community participation, youth engagement, and partnerships among governments, educational institutions, civil society organisations, and the private sector.
The presentation encourages participants to view fruit trees not only as environmental assets but also as long-term investments in healthier ecosystems, sustainable livelihoods, and resilient communities.
